Intersex And Hermaphrodite
Intersex And Hermaphrodite
How many people in the world are born intersex?
When you are trying to determine the number of how many people are born intersexed, it can be a little difficult because there are a lot of different conditions that can be considered intersex. From genetic conditions to physical actual structural conditions. And so you can look at ISA.ORG which is The Intersex Society Of America, for exact breakdowns, but they estimate that one in a hundred births actually have some situation going on that pushes them along the continuum between male and female.
Some of those of course are out liars when it is one in ten to twenty thousand. And they have more dramatic issues. And then there are some who have minor issues, hormonal issues and such that might not ever be detected without pretty intensive testing.
What are the similarities and differences between an intersex person and a transgender person?
Intersex people and transgendered people are different because some intersex people are facing a congenital condition that is manifested very detectably through different physical tests. Transgendered or transsexual people are dealing with sexual and gender issues that are not so easily diagnosable, and often seem to come more from the soul and the heart than from a chromosomal test.
But by and large both intersex and transgendered people face similar issues of discrimination from society, stemming from society's discomfort with our failure to conform to the either/or gender binary. Although we're very different in a lot of ways, we often pool our resources to get legal and sexual rights.
