STOP MURDER MUSIC CAMPAIGN:
SIZZLA’S CONCERT CANCELLED, VYBZ KARTEL’S STILL ON
Press release No. TR101NT11H
Paris, Thursday 10 September 2010
_
Tjenbé Rèd, the Afro-Caribbean association for the struggle against all forms of racism, homophobia and AIDS, the French section of the international network Stop Murder Music (SMM), takes note of the cancellation of the concert by Sizzla, the Jamaican homophobic singer, which was due to take place 24 September at the Elysée-Montmartre in the 18th Arrondissement of Paris.
In a press release, the Garance group ( owners of this concert hall) explains.
«Put on the spot by an article in Le Parisien, by Tjenbé Rèd and by Ian Brossat, elected representative for the 18th arrondissement, Garance thinks it important to underline the fact that Sizzla has never been the object of condamnations in France for homophobic utterances and has never emitted such utterances on a French stage since he signed the Reggae Compassionate Act (RCA), a Code of Conduct, in April 2007.» [1]
Repeating a lie does not make it true. Last February, Sizzla denied having signed the RCA, which, besides, he had broken in May, June, July and December 2007, and further broken in April of this year. [2]
Tjenbé Rèd recalls that the international Stop Murder Music campaign is not meant to protect European ears, but to fight against homophobic murders in Jamaica, a country in which singers such as Sizzla and Vybz Kartel are venerated. This makes the calls for murder they send out regularly against homosexuals a major factor of insecurity for these people. [3]
Since Vybz Kartel is still due to appear at the Elysée-Montmartre on Sunday 24 September, Tjenbé Rèd applauds the continued activities of Mr Ian Brossat, chair of the Communist Party and Left Party group in Paris city council, against murder music. [4]
