Bruce didn't mean that!
Saturday, May 31, 2008 - The Jamaica Observer
Dear Editor,
Am I the only person who saw Prime Minister Golding's remarks about gays in Cabinet as a statement of "Don't ask, don't tell", and not one of "I will make sure there are no gay people in the Cabinet!" He already stated that what people do in private is their business, and I don't think Mr Golding would go about questioning potential Cabinet members about their sexual habits. There is no threat of a witch-hunt.
There are many people in Jamaica who are believed to be gay, but no one troubles them because they don't tell, nor do they try to force anyone to accept their lifestyle. It is usually when people either flaunt their homosexuality or try to make it an issue that the violent reaction against them starts. This does not justify violence against homosexuality, but it does remind everyone to keep their private business private. I don't know what your sex life is like, and I don't want to know.
